Description
I based this painting based on a photo I took while on the boat back from my grandparents’ house on Piers Island; it was a soul-crushing day, as my parents and I were still struggling to sell our house in miserable Calgary, Alberta (accursed be its name).
Some months after we finally moved back to my birthplace of Vancouver Island, I channelled both the memory of sadness from that day and the great relief at my later return to the Island into “Sailboat in Fog”, which quickly became one of my most popular paintings.
After I painted this piece, the people who own the boat—which is called the Duen—liked it so much that they gave me a ride in it. I got to climb out and lie in the net of the bowsprit.
